The majority of high school students across America enjoy participating in an after-school activity, and many of them could not imagine their high school career without their designated after-school practice or meeting. At 2:15 p.m., a flood of Wildcats heads to the locker rooms, awaiting their practice of the day. Junior Kylan Davis, a Hazelwood West multi-athlete, is no exception.
Competing year-round with no breaks, including during summer break when most high school students are sleeping in and playing video games, All Conference Linebacker, Davis, fills his time with grueling football pre-season practices every day in the summer heat. Currently, Davis is a three-sport varsity athlete competing in the summer and fall for football, wrestling in the winter and track in the spring.
Davis currently holds well over 20 varsity wins already this wrestling season, with a month left to go, and has placed at five varsity tournaments, with the highest being 3rd at Westminster. With most of the varsity wrestling team graduating this coming year, Davis looks to step up as one of the leaders of the wrestling team next season.
“I first started wrestling in sixth grade, and I fell in love with it ever since,” Davis said. “I want to win State. It’s always been my goal.”
Inheriting a passion for both the field and the mat, Davis has flourished under the unique, high-pressure guidance of his father’s coaching. His dad has influenced him in sports ever since he was a kid.
“ He’s always been my coach my whole life, so it’s normal,” Davis said. “Whenever I have a problem with something, I can ask him.”
However, the influence goes deeper than wins and losses. By navigating the complexities of a coach-athlete relationship, Davis has developed a maturity far beyond his years, showing up no matter what. Davis demonstrates just the athlete he is on and off the mat: selfless, versatile and coach-able.
Although Davis only recently started track, he has already found a deep passion for the sport and looks forward to every practice.
“Sports taught me to keep pushing through always and gave me discipline and work ethic and taught me the importance of teamwork,” Davis said.
While also exceeding outside of the mats and fields. Davis maintains a 3.4 GPA. Davis is ambitious outside of high school and has goals to play football at his dream college Georgia Tech while majoring in sports management and looking to make it the NFL.
