5 am: Alarm rings. 6 am: Out the door. Eight hours of jam-packed AP curriculum. 2:15: Attend weekly club meeting. 4 pm: Straight to softball practice. 7 pm: Home again to complete a mountain of homework. This exhausting routine is an average day in the life of West High’s 11th-grade Allisan Cafolla.
While a busy day in the life of a high school student athlete isn’t foreign, Cafolla’s strategic management and checklist of achievements are what set her apart from the rest. Through a meticulous and diligent work ethic, Cafolla has achieved a top-ranking GPA well over 4.0, was named Conference Pitcher of the year her junior year, and has played a crucial varsity starting position on West’s softball team all three years of high school.
Obviously, Cafolla has come face-to-face with some intense times; the chaotic nature of her schedule makes it crucial to stay motivated and build strategies that keep her afloat. Relying on setting short-term and long-term goals, Cafolla’s high-stakes workload requires tedious management, forcing her to prioritize her schedule regularly. Cafolla conducts her routine with a strict program, establishing high expectations to ensure she doesn’t drop the ball in any area of her life.
“Just by taking every moment one step at a time, knowing that stressful moments are made worth it through the goals they help achieve,” Cafolla said.
In today’s fast-paced world, constant high-intensity work inevitably leads to burnout, draining both productivity and well-being. For a busy individual like Cafolla, it is easy to become trapped in a cycle of relentless deadlines. Recognizing that intentional rest is essential for long-term performance, Cafolla cherishes her downtime using it as an opportunity to recharge her mental, emotional, and physical energy, ensuring a more sustainable approach to her long list of responsibilities.
“It’s important because if you are constantly stressed and overworked, you can feel burnout, which could have overall negative effects…having an avenue where you can say, okay, I’m just gonna put that all aside is healthy for your mental state,” Cafolla said.
Almost everyone can point to the person who got them through their hardest moments. For Cafolla, the role of a supportive figure is a vital source of strength, fostering both resilience and stability throughout her times of challenge. Staying diligent to her goals, Cafolla breaks apart her heavy workload piece by piece, incorporating the counsel of her close circle. The combination of Cafolla’s foundation and dedicated drive prepared the perfect storm for her roaring success.
“The biggest lesson I was ever taught was to be yourself and recognize your strengths and weaknesses…My mom taught me that you can improve by recognizing what your weakness is and then turning it into a strength. If you make a mistake, look at it as an opportunity to grow and improve your weakness,” Cafolla said.
