At Hazelwood West High School, students are greeted each morning not just with breakfast, but with a smile from Mrs.Sharon. This marks her 10th year working in the cafeteria, a milestone she admits she never expected.
“I wasn’t planning on staying this long,” Mrs. Sharon said.
After retiring in 2013 in a different career, she found herself wanting something to do. The school was close to home, and what began as a way to stay busy soon turned to something more.
Her day starts earlier than both the teachers and students. Since the cafeteria has been short-staffed, she has been clocking in around 5:30 a.m. Despite the early mornings, she shows up ready for whatever challenges the day brings.
“I never know [what to expect] until I get here. Things change everyday. Nothing stays the same,” Sharon said.
From preparing breakfast to serving students, flexibility is key. Sharon depends on her work ethic to stay positive and dedicated.
“The way I work, nothing’s hard. I put my mind to it, this has to be done and I do it,” Sharon said.
Being in her job for an entire decade has taken a lot of positivity, but the most rewarding part of her job isn’t the food or the money, it is the students. Students are what make her day special. She loves watching students grow up over the years
“Interacting with some of the kids is my motivation,” Sharon said. “Some I’ve talked to since freshman year, and now they are seniors.”
Although students look forward to their favorite lunches, which Sharon knows is nacho day, seeing growth is something she looks forward to.
One of her favorite memories happened just last year when graduating seniors came back to give her a hug. Moments like that remind her why she continues to come to work with a smile.
After 10 years, Mrs. Sharon has become more than just a cafeteria worker; she’s a familiar and caring presence in the school. And for many students her cheerful “Good morning” is the perfect way to start the day.
