As the music embraces the audience, a figure jumps out onto stage… Lead Choreographer, senior Ava Nichols breaks into a dance from the hit musical “Legally Blonde.” While she performs with a smile on her face, being Lead Choreographer is anything but straightforward.
Nichols is HWHS Troop 786’s Student choreographer, and she is responsible for the creation of dances that people can perform no matter the skill level.
“I always try my hardest to create dances that everyone will be able to perform and have fun performing! It is tough when there are people who have never danced before but I enjoy the challenge!” Nichols said.
Growing up, dance has a huge impact on Nichols life, she was engaged in both dance and cheer in her entire high school career. Although, she never would have thought that she would be on stage in a theater. Nichols preferred The HWHS Dance Team and was planning to stay there her entire high school career.
“I didnt even know about the plays or theater really. I found out about the musicals when I was walking to the orchestra and saw that the Theater Department needed dancers for their Spring musical “Catch Me If You Can”. I read that and decided, “Hey. . .what’s the worst that could happen!” Nichols said.
Ever since she got a role as an Ensemble Member (Background Dancer) in the Spring Musical, Nichols had been engaged in theater ever since, with roles in almost every production since then. And has become an Honors Thespian and furthering, signing her name on the Fox Theater walls.
While being a student choreographer is definitely rewarding, It is also extremely stressful. Nichols has to balance everything on top of schoolwork and maintaining a personal life. With deadlines looming and the stress of everything happening all at one time it can be overwhelming at times.
“It definitely is overwhelming and stressful, especially during the musical but I try my hardest to take time to myself and have time to myself and unwind. I tell my parents and friends that I just need time to relax and do my work and they understand that! Even though it becomes anxiety-ridden and demanding at times I really do enjoy what I do and I love doing it for the theater and myself!” Nichols said.
Theater inspired Nichols to “focus on the small things” and learn from every experience, both good and bad. She has really proven herself in the Theater Department and shown everyone that she is serious about what she does.
“You never know when taking a different route to class could inspire you to join an activity that you will love for the rest of your life! Don’t let what people think or say impact what you do, especially if you love it!” Nichols said.
