Originally launched to raise awareness for ALS, this new initiative aims to encourage the pressing issue of mental health awareness, encouraging participants to share their personal experiences and foster a supportive community.
The challenge openly invites people to pour a bucket of ice-cold water over themselves and then challenge friends by nominating them to do the same. Doing this gets the message across that encourages participants to open up about mental health. The chilling water opens up the discussion of symbolizing the stark reality many face when dealing with mental health issues, sometimes uncomfortable but necessary to confront.
Previously, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge paved the way for the current USC Ice Bucket Challenge by raising awareness about ALS disease and, in doing so, changed the fight against ALS forever. “They inspired over 17 million people around the world to dump ice water on their heads and donate to an ALS organization.
